Earth Day! Created in 1970, its just one day a year that now more than 183 countries come together to celebrate the earth and environmental protection. But, given the state of our earth and how many people share it, we think it’s important to celebrate earth day, every day! Here are some of our favorite ways to be more sustainable every day:
1. Avoid fast fashion. This one is obvious for us! Fast fashion is the second most polluting industry in the entire world, and we’re not just talking about the emissions and water usage that go into creating poorly made clothes. On average, more than 80 billion pieces of clothing are bought and thrown away each year. When you buy new clothing, buy less and choose well! Our pieces are sustainably sourced and will last you a lifetime.
2. Skip plastics. Probably the most talked about way to save our earth, and especially our oceans. Even if you recycle your plastic, the reality that is if it isn’t cleaned or somehow ends up mixed with other recyclables, it won’t be recycled. Of all the plastic used each year, a whopping 91% of it isn’t recycled. If it is one of the lucky 9%, the quality of plastic gets worse with each recycle and eventually the only option is to throw it in the trash. Opt for reusable options like wood or metal that can be used forever!
3. Limit consumption of animal products. We’re talking meat, dairy, and those sketchy preservatives that are sourced from animals (if you know what gelatin is, you know what we’re talking about). Vegan diets have the smallest impact on our environment, but even cutting your consumption of red meat can decrease the carbon impact of your diet by 25%. Plant based diets also have proven health benefits. Good for the planet, and for you. It’s a win-win!
4. Sign petitions! No matter how many changes you make in your everyday life, at the end of the day it is also up to businesses, corporations, and government to make changes. Together we can do so much more, and it’s our job to hold them accountable! Take some time out of your day to sign petitions online, even if they don’t affect you directly. Some popular movements lately include emission caps, banning of single use plastics, and districts switching to compostable materials. Get informed and support what matters most to you!
These are just some ways to incorporate earth day and sustainable decisions into every day of your life, but there are countless more and always new technology being developed to help us care for our planet. Remember that when you throw something away, there is no “away.” Every dollar you spent is supporting the world you want to live in- be a conscious consumer! Support reusables, small or local businesses, and brands that give back. We have one home to share and pass on to our next generation. Let’s take care of it!
